Ogx® Purifying + Charcoal Detox Shampoo & Conditioner Review

September 2019

OGX Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner

I recently went on a search to find a new detox shampoo to help remove product buildup from my hair and scalp. Finding a detox shampoo isn’t necessarily difficult, especially considering there are hundreds on the market. However, finding a detox shampoo that works well on African American hair requires a bit more effort.

What is detox shampoo?

Before I get into my review and first impression of Ogx’s Purifying + Charcoal Detox Shampoo and Conditioner; I want to explain what detox shampoo is, and some of the benefits of using it.

Detox shampoo is essentially a clarifying shampoo, which can simply be defined as a cleansing shampoo. Contrary to popular belief, not all shampoos actually clean your hair and scalp. Most shampoos do a great job of removing a decent amount of dirt from your hair, but only detox/clarifying shampoos provide a deep cleanse of your hair and scalp. It is extremely important to deep cleanse your hair and scalp, especially if you use a ton of moisturizing and styling products.

Heavy use of hair products eventually causes buildup on your hair and scalp, which makes it harder for your hair follicles to produce new hair. Product buildup can also result in hair breakage, and make your hair appear super greasy and “weighted down”. Hence, making it important to incorporate a detox/clarifying shampoo. However, it is important to remember not to over do it with your detox/clarifying shampoo.

Detox shampoo essentially strips your hair of all dirt, product buildup, but also oils that provide moisture, which can cause your hair to feel really dry. Detox shampoo should by no means replace your regular shampoo.
I typically aim to use my detox shampoo every 3-4 weeks; my usage is primarily based off of how much product has been applied to my hair.

My first impression and review

I LOVE and already use a lot of OGX’s hair products and lotions, so I was really excited to try their detox shampoo and conditioner. My first impression of the shampoo and conditioner was that it smelled really good. The consistency of both products was amazing. I washed my hair 2-3 times in one setting using the shampoo, and was pleasantly surprised to find that my hair was not left feeling rough. I was really expecting my hair to have that rough/dry feeling that typically comes with clarifying shampoos, but that wasn’t the case. So, that was really a plus for me!

So, after my washes, I went in with the Purifying + Charcoal Detox Conditioner. The texture of this conditioner is perfect. The consistency of the conditioner is thick and creamy, but not sticky. So, moisture is added back into the hair without weighting the hair back down. I left the conditioner on for 20-30 minutes, and covered my hair with a micro-fiber towel turban.

I allowed my hair to dry, and then proceeded with styling. After I was finished, my hair felt really soft and had a healthy looking sheen. I felt as thought my hair had the perfect balance of a deep clean with moisture and hydration still present. For now, I will definitely continue to use this product. I recommend this detox and moisturizing combo to anyone who wants to add a deep cleanse step to his or her’s hair regime.
